Things to do on your way
Our family visited the Oregon Wildlife Safari Park and drove through some years back. It is described at http://www.wildlifesafari.org/.
In Winston there used to an old-fashioned Drive In where we stopped for root beer floats.
I sometimes stop at either the Giradet Winery in Ten Mile or Abacela Winery closer to Winston. Both wineries have signs on OR 42 giving directions. Giradet is a small operation run by the son of the founder. They are proud of their very traditional methods, organic, i.e., not using insecticides and dry farming (no irrigation). More about this winery at http://www.girardetwine.com/. In contrast, Abacela is a very interesting scientific application of geology, climate and experimentation. These factors led them to specialize in wines grown in the Northwest of Spain, especially their award-winning Tempranillo. The Abacela website gives a full explanation of what they are doing. See http://www.abacela.com. Be sure to check out their very interesting weather page.
