Notes about your Camper Profile
I thought it might be helpful to comment on things you can do with your "My account" pages.
You'll also note on my posts the David, your friendly local webmaster line at the bottom. This is whatever you write in the Signature text box just above the Upload Picture heading mentioned above. This is entirely optional, like the picture. But just in case you are wondering why my posts have that line there, that's all there is to it.
On the same page as the stuff above, there's also a heading called Block configuration. What's that about?
You'll see some check boxes for WeatherLink, Affiliates, and Subscriptions right now. These could change in the future, but that's what's there now. These correspond to "blocks" in the right sidebar, the CURRENT WEATHER AND FORECAST thing, the Affiliated with... box, and on certain screens, a subscriptions thing. If you, say, get bored seeing these over there, you can uncheck the corresponding box and they will go away. I just thought you might like having the option. Just because. I may change my mind about offering such options (and you should chime in here if you have any opinions about this), and perhaps we'll come up with other things to put in the sidebars or wherever, and these things may also give you the option of turning them on or off in the same way.
And now you know.
Down at the bottom of your profile page there's a Messaging and Notifications settings section. What's all that, then?
campmyrtlewood.org offers what I [so modestly] think is a very sweet feature that allows you to get automatically notified if something gets posted here that you might be interested in. You can subscribe to all posts by a given Camper or to all comments on a particular post by any Camper or visitor. You can also be notified if anyone responds to something you posted. If you leave the Default send method on Mail, you'll get an email from the site with such notifications. The alternate Web option will put a notification in the left sidebar when you are on the site, and you won't get any emails. The Default send interval lets you determine how promptly you receive such notifications.
The aforementioned subscriptions block will appear in the right sidebar in contexts where you have an opportunity to create, modify, or cancel subscriptions that will trigger such notification messages.
What I think is great about this is that if there are particular discussions happening here that you want to be in the loop on, you can stay in that loop without having to log in to the website just to see if someone's posted something (assuming you've left the Default send method on Mail). This makes the Forums much more valuable than email discussions because the entire discussion stays in one place, in the forum topic (you don't have to keep track of what might be a whole string of emails), and yet you have the timeliness of email. The email will contain the content of the post or comment, so you don't have to login just to read it, but of course you'll need to login if you want to reply.
I can also give you the option of getting your notifications via Twitter and/or SMS text if Campers express an interest in this.
In addition to using the subscriptions block in the sidebar to manage your subscriptions, you can go to the Notifications page of your profile (the My accounts pages) using the options across the top (which I should perhaps make look like the tabs that they basically are). The Notifications page gives you all kinds of control of what and who you subscribe to and how you get notified. You can get email for some things and a message on the website for others, etc.
Today I've been looking into seeing if I could make it possible for campers to have multiple accounts that shared a single email address. For example, a husband and wife who want to have their own accounts but only have one email account between them.
It turns out that there are several problems with this scenario. Because of the section of the website that supports our fundraising efforts and other financial transactions, I cannot install a fix to allow shared email addresses. But if I were able to do so, it would create some significant issues, and potentially create more problems than it solves. For example, if you need to use the "Request new password" function, you would have to make sure you used your Campername rather than your email address when you made the request. If you used your email address for this function, which account would be issued the new password? In fact, it would be the first account created with that email address, and if that wasn't you, things could get very confusing, not to mention irritating.
It is easy to get free email accounts; I like gmail for such accounts myself. You can just go to http://www.google.com/accounts/ and select the Gmail link toward the lower left. There are various other options for free accounts as well, such as hotmail.com. I really believe that is a much better solution than trying to share email accounts. What do you think?

My Forum posts and other comments all have a little photo on the left side, obviously. Any Camper, meaning someone who's created an account here, can do the same if you wish, by uploading a small image via your "My account" page(s). Click on My account below your name on the left sidebar, click on Edit below your Camper Name at the top of that page, and about halfway down there's the heading Upload Picture. Click on the Choose File button below that to browse to a photo on your computer and you're about done. Whether it is a photo of you or some other image is all up to you. Be sure to click on Save at the bottom, though.
